Regional/National Tournaments

Heartland Bowl Regional Minor League Football Tournament

4 League Champions in each region will play for the USFA National Championship.

Mission Statement

The Heartland Minor League Football Regional Tournament is designed to promote the sport of American rules football in the eight north central heartland states of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota regardless of the teams' local, regional or national affiliation.

Regional Champions will be crowned for each level:
1. Heartland Bowl/Mid-America Regional Champion 3A Trophy.
2. Heartland Bowl/Mid-America Regional Champion 2A Trophy.
Josten’s Championship Ring Division will be designing the Champions' team ring.
There will be 8 total teams in the tournament, four in each division:

  • 1st seed vs 4th seed
  • 2nd seed vs 3rd seed
  • Eligible Teams

    All eleven-man Minor League Football teams in this eight-state region that are 3A, 2A and/or independents. Champions will also be eligible for other AFA regional and national tournaments.

    Tournament Dates

    The Heartland Bowl Tournament consists of two semi-final games and a final game the following weekend for each level - this is done to reduce travel costs and additional postseason issues. The semi-final round will begin on or before playoff games date at the home of highest seed in each division.
    All Heartland Bowl Regional Championship Games will be played in Minneapolis, MN at the HHH Metrodome on championship game date.
    Trophies will be awarded after each championship game at approximately the following times:
    2A Championship at 2:30 PM
    3A Championship at 5:30 PM

    Seeding Criteria

    Currently, there are 48 Minor League teams in this region, 8 will be eligible for this tournament. Seeding will be determined as follows:
    1. All managers, head coaches and team owners in this region will be polled to help determine the seeding.
    2. Teams' win/loss record against same level teams.
    3. Forfeits do not count as wins. However, if your team forfeited a regular season game for any reason it counts as a loss.
    4. In the case of a tie, MLFN power rankings may be used.
    5. Additional win/loss rules may be added.
    6. The Heartland Bowl will consist of the next four best available teams after the 3A and 2A brackets have been set.
    Additional notes:
    • Team rosters must be set by roster date and all players must have played during the current season; no All-Star teams.
    • Player Rosters MUST be in by roster date for teams to be eligible.

    Game Rules

    1. NFL Rules Apply.
    2. 6 Referees, plus 1 official timer.
    3. Teams must wear complete and matching uniforms.

    Cost

    1. There is no cost to be in this tournament in terms of an entry fee.
    2. Top seed teams must pay for 1st round home field, referees and insurance.
    3. Traveling teams must allow for any and all travel costs.
    4. The winning teams of the first round must allow for travel to Minneapolis, MN for Championship Games.
